NIGERIA POLICE INTERCEPT 34,000 LIVE CARTRIDGES FROM TOGO AT OGUN STATE BORDER

The Ogun State Police Command has intercepted a mini truck conveying 34,865 live cartridges through Ilara border from the Republic of Togo to Onitsha in Anambra States.

The police also arrested three suspects, including a Togolese, Isa Muhammad and two Nigerians, Alabi Fayemi and Seyi Bamgbose in connections with the crime.

The truck and the suspects were arrested by a stop-and-search border patrol team at Olohunda, a border town between Abeokuta North and Imeko Afon local government areas of the State.

While parading the suspects at the Imeko Police Station, Saturday, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Ahmed Iliyasu said the suspect were arrested by border patrol led by an Assistance Commissioner of Police, Shettima Muhammad.

He said, “Our operatives on border patrol led by ACP Shettima Muhammad while on routine patrol of the border area based on intelligence, intercepted a Toyota Dyna Mini truck with registration number KSF 254 XX with some cartons neatly concealed therein.

“The mode of the concealment aroused the suspicion of our men consequent upon which the vehicle was stopped and properly searched. Upon the search, 34, 865 live cartridges were discovered in cartons neatly concealed inside the vehicle.”

Isa Muhammad who is the prime suspect while speaking with journalists said the vehicle was given to him by one of his Nigerian customers based in Onitsha to help drive.

Isa said since he doesn’t not have a valid drivers licence, he approaches another friend of his, Bamgbose, who is a qualified driver to help in driving the vehicle while he serve as motor boy.

According to him, the vehicle was successfully brought into Nigeria from Republic of Togo and they were enroute Abeokuta for a repair work on the vehicle when they were arrested by the Police.

While denying knowledge of the ammunition, Isa said he didn’t know the name of the man that gave the vehicle to him and would have taken the vehicle to Onitsha thinking it was empty.

Corroborating Isa, Bamgbose, also claimed that he was only called upon by Isa for them to collaborate and engage in charcoal business.

He said, “I know Isa in Idi Iroko border and he used to sleep in my house whenever they come to Nigeria with his boss. One day I told him I don’t have a job again because my vehicle was sized by the Customs.

“Recently, he called me that a vehicle is available and I was happy because he told me it was a new vehicle. We went to Togo where the vehicle was packed, I observed that the vehicle was registered with Nigeria number.

“When we got to Nigeria, some of my friends told me that the spring of the vehicle was too small for charcoal business and I told him we should go to Abeokuta to repair the vehicle.

“While on the way, we were arrested at Imala and when I was asked to park, I complied because I know all the officers and I was sure the documents were up to date.

“I was even expecting the police to name their price since I know all of them but the story was different. Initially I thought the vehicle documents were not genuine but they told us later in the day that there was Indian hemp and ammunitions in the vehicle and I stated laughing because it was an empty vehicle.

“We were taken to the Station, this morning and even when we got to the station, I insisted it was an empty vehicle but when they started offloading, I was equally astonished, I didn’t expect what I saw from the vehicle because it was right in our presence that the content of the vehicle was offloaded.”

ARMED BANDITS TAKE OVER 8 LGAs IN KATSINA STATE

Barely 24 hours after Governor Bello Masari of Katsina raised the alarm on the invasion of the state by armed bandits from neighbouring Zamfara, the state government has expressed doubts if the general elections scheduled to begin with the presidential polls next month will hold in parts of the state because of the precarious security situation across some eight local government areas.

Governor Masari had last Wednesday alerted the nation, at the opening ceremony of an emergency security meeting at the Government House, that armed robbers and kidnappers had literally taken over Katsina State as he consequently tagged the state unsafe for anybody including him.

Briefing reporters on Thursday evening, on some of the deliberations at the meeting, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed Inuwa, warned that unless the security situation is addressed the elections may not hold in at least eight local government areas of the state.

Described as frontline locations controlled by bandits and cattle rustlers, the local government areas are, Jibia, Batsari, Safana, Dan-Musa, Faskari, Sabuwa, Dandume, Kankara and parts of Kafur, Masari’s local government. Jibia shares “porous” boundaries with the Republic of Niger, routes activities of unrepentant smugglers thrive with regular bloody clashes with joint security patrol teams from Nigeria and Niger. Apart from this, the local governments have a common denominator governing them as they are all linked with the Rugu forest, said to be some 2010 square kilometres stretch, starting from the Republic of Niger, through to Katsina and parts of Kaduna State. Comparable only to the dreaded Sambisa forest in Borno State, Rugu forest is reportedly a comfort zone for bandits and other criminal elements who apparently exploit the terrain to remain virtually out of reach of the security forces.

According to Mustapha, “certainly, if the situation continues this way, it is going to affect the elections. If you ask INEC officials to go and conduct the elections in the affected areas they may not be willing to go there. We have to safeguard the places before the elections.”

The expanded security council meeting had traditional rulers, security chiefs in the state, interim local council chairmen from the affected local government areas, village heads and religious leaders, among others in attendance. Mustapha said that the meeting resolved to raise a committee which he heads, to examine all the issues discussed and how to tackle them.

As he put it, “I hope you are all aware of the measures this government has been taking in handling the security situation in the state. We have archived a lot especially in the area of cattle rustling and banditry. We were able to curtail the issue of castle rustling to a reasonable level and banditry to to some extent because of the measures taken by government. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks back, the issue of kidnapping became so serious to a level that the experience we had over cattle rustling became a child’s play.

“The meeting identified lack of synergy among the security forces fighting bandits in Zamfara Kaduna and Katsina states. We agreed that these states and the Republic of Niger must come together to tackle this problem headlong. The meeting also identified that the security is grossly inadequate especially the police and therefore mandated the governor to solicit the assistance of the Inspector-General of Police to increase the police personnel and equip them with modern equipment.

“We may also have to de-gazzete some of the frontline areas where these activities take place, particularly the forests close the urban centres in the state. Those places were initially designed to be grazing areas for livestock but the criminals have turned them to their hiding place. The Emirs of Katsina and Daura as well as the ulama will be involved in this and we urge them not only to intensify their prayers but to equally continually appeal to their subjects to fear God.”

Analysing the security situation in the state, an apparently embattled Masari had told participants at the meeting on Wednesday that, “no one, including myself, is safe, I am not safe.” He ranked cattle rustling number three on his list of acts of prevailing threats to security of lives and property in the state, noting that kidnaping and armed robbery have taken the centre stage.

According to the governor, “our state is currently under serious siege, by bandits, kidnappers, with castle rustlers taking the third position. Kidnaping is now the order of the day in Katsina State. Armed robbery is also now the order of the day in Katsina State. Only two days ago, some people left my residence at about 3am and when they got to the Ring Road area, a gang of of about five fully armed men robbed them at gunpoint. So, this is how bad it has become now. All the security reports I received today (Wednesday) is either about kidnapings or armed robbery. So, our state is under siege and that is why we decided to call for this extra-ordinary meeting. No one, including myself is safe. A woman, I was told, was abducted by kidnappers and after demanding N5 million they shot the person who took the money to them.”

The Zamfara connection

The eight most affected local governments in Katsina share boundaries with Zamfara State where armed banditry currently reigns supreme, according to reports. Traveling on the 150-kilometre Jibia – Gusua road through Kaura Namoda has become nightmarish for motorists as bandits continue to harvest commuters and abduct them into the nearby forests around Gidan Jaja, Chabas and Yan Bedi, all close to Katsina. According a recent report, victims whose relations are not able to pay the ransom demanded are butchered and sold as spare parts to herbalists.

Last week, some 2000 persons, according to the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency, fled their communities in Zamfara and currently taking refuge at various locations in Kankara local government area of Katsina.

Until recently, bandits had found fertile ground in parts of Katsina State with hoodlums embarking on bloody raids on a number of communities in Safana, Batsari, Jibia, Danmusa, Kurfi, Dutsima, Kankakara, Dandume, Faskari and Sabuwa local government areas.

It’s leadership failure, PDP claims

Reacting to the Masari outcry, the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State urged both Masari and President Buhari to step aside, having failed, according to the party, to provide the necessary security for citizens. According to the PDP Chairman who is also the party’s governorship running mate, Alhaji Salisu Majigiri, “this is a confession from the Chief Security Officer of the state and I think the best thing Masari can do is to take the path of honour and step aside as governor. His resignation will pave way for Katsina not to continue to be under siege.”

MAN, 40, ATTEMPTS SUICIDE OVER WIFE’S REFUSAL TO RETURN HOME

The Police in Jigawa on Friday said a 40-year-old man, Abdullahi Jafaru, was hospitalised after he attempted to commit suicide. The command Spokesman, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Dutse. Jinjiri said Jafaru attempted to commit suicide because he failed to convince his wife, Halima Abdullahi, to return home after a misunderstanding that made her abscond from the matrimonial home.

“Dec. 31, 2018, a woman by name Halima Abdullahi absconded from her matrimonial home because of misunderstanding with her husband, Abdullahi Jafaru, aged 40, of Shunar village in Kafinhausa Local Government Area. “And attempts made by the said Abdullahi to console Halima to come back to his house being his first wife with six children proved abortive.

ALERT: NON-ELECTRONIC YELLOW CARD WILL BE INVALID FROM APRIL

The federal government says the yellow cards that were issued in the country will be rendered invalid starting from April 1.

The yellow card is the international certificate of vaccination or prophylaxis.

The ministry of health said to obtain an e-yellow card, one has to register on the official website in addition to paying N2,000.

The payment receipt will then be taken along with the applicant’s international passport to any port health services office to get vaccinated so as to complete the process.

The ministry said it takes maximum of an hour for the card to be ready after vaccination, and that international travellers are to be vaccinated at least 10 days before travelling.

August 1, 2018 marked the official expiry date of the old yellow card and commencement of issuance of electronic yellow card.

The card, which is machine-readable, and has the ability to store vaccination history of the holder, was designed to put an end to the era of fake yellow card issued by unauthorised personnel for years.

The card has increasingly become an essential travel document, with several embassies making it a prerequisite for visa application

MAN, 60, CAUGHT WITH AT LEAST 12 SOAKED SANITARY PADS AND FEMALE UNDERWEARS

A 60-year-old suspected ritualist was caught in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday evening with dozens of female underwear.

The suspects, whose real name was not disclosed at the time of this report, was caught at Danjuma area, along Isikan road in Akure.

Several eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that the man was caught by commercial motorcylists while picking female undergarments. He was beaten to a pulp and stripped.

One of the witnesses, Miss Adeola Oluwasegun, said the suspect was first mistaken for a mentally unstable person by the residents until he was exposed.

"We first saw the old man roaming the streets like a mentally unstable man, holding a small bag, and we thought he was begging for food or money. Later, we noticed some commercial motorcyclists shouting 'Thief! Thief!!' from afar. They dragged the bag from him, and it was discovered that he had items such as bra, panties, clothes and soaked sanitary pads in his possession.

"Many residents were angry and they gave him the serious beating of his life. In fact, they nearly lynched him before he was whisked away by some elderly people."

At least 12 soaked sanitary pads and underwears were found in possession of the suspect. It was learnt that the suspect was later handed over to officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Oladipo Samuel, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NSCDC in Ondo State, confirmed the incident when contacted by SaharaReporters.

Samuel added that the suspect was in custody and helping with investigation and would be handed over to the Police soon.

"Truly, he was handed over to our men yesterday and he is helping our team of investigators in the office with very useful information. We would get back to you after our investigation and probably before we hand him over to the Police for proper prosecution over the case," he said.

STUDY SHOWS INDIAN HEMP CONSUMPTION AFFECTS DNA PROFILE IN SPERM

Indian-hemp-farm

A recent study from Duke University Medical Center, United States reveals that exposure to cannabis or Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by men in their child-bearing years alters the genetic profile of their sperm.

The study also revealed that many outside factors can effect sperm, ranging from tobacco smoke to pesticides, flame retardants to obesity, all of which can have epigenetic effects.

Epigenetics are inheritable traits that don’t effect DNA sequencing, but typically stem from life experiences.

The new research shows that THC can affect epigenetics, causing structural and regulatory changes in the DNA of users’ sperm.

The study which looked at 24 men discovered that THC appears to target genes in two major cellular pathways and alters DNA methylation, a process essential to normal development

The senior author of the study, Scott Kollins, a Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences said, “what we have found is that the effects of cannabis use on males and their reproductive health are not completely null.

“In that there’s something about cannabis use that affects the genetic profile in sperm.”

The co-author of the study, Susan Murphy, an Associate Professor said “We know that there are effects of cannabis use on the regulatory mechanisms in sperm DNA, but we don’t know whether they can be transmitted to the next generation.”

Murphy added that “In the absence of a larger, definitive study, the best advice would be to assume these changes are going to be there. We don’t know whether they are going to be permanent.

“I would say, as a precaution, stop using cannabis for at least six months before trying to conceive,” she stressed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Cannabis or Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the THC which contains mind-altering chemicals and other similar compounds.
